What we do
usaPsdletter.com is a U.S. online service. You book an evaluation for free, talk with a licensed clinician by phone or video for about 5–10 minutes, and, if the clinician finds it appropriate, receive a signed PDF letter. You can use that letter when you ask a housing provider for a reasonable accommodation, and it can travel with the forms an airline may require.
We built the service around one idea: the letter should be true. It should come from a real, licensed clinician who actually spoke with you, and it should describe a real disability and a dog that is actually trained to help with it.
Who writes our PSD letters
Two licensed clinicians handle the clinical work. Gabriel Warner, LCSW, a licensed clinical social worker, carries out the mental health evaluations behind PSD letter requests and issues letters when appropriate. Andrew Patel, M.D., a physician, reviews evaluations and signs letters when the clinical findings support one, and he is the clinical reviewer of this site's content.
Every letter lists the clinician's name, license type, license number, issuing state and the date, so anyone relying on it can confirm the license with the state board.
What a PSD letter can do
We would rather tell you the limits up front than have you learn them at a front desk. Here is the short version.
- Housing: under the Fair Housing Act, the HUD and DOJ joint statement on reasonable accommodations lets housing providers ask for reliable documentation of a disability and the disability-related need for an animal when these are not obvious. A letter is useful here.
- Public places: under the ADA, businesses cannot require documentation, and a letter does not grant public access. Your dog's training and behavior are what count.
- Flights: airlines may require the DOT Service Animal Air Transportation Form, which you complete. A letter can accompany it but does not replace it.
- Registries and certificates: there is no official federal registry, certificate, ID card or vest, and online registrations have no legal effect.
Our honesty standards
We never promise approval. The clinician decides based on your evaluation, and no letter can promise how a landlord or airline will respond. If a letter is not appropriate, you are not charged.
We do not use words like certified, registered or official to describe our letters, because those labels have no legal meaning for service dogs. We also do not publish testimonials or invented statistics.
If your dog comforts you but has not been trained to perform specific tasks, the accurate document is an emotional support animal (ESA) letter, not a PSD letter. We do not sell ESA letters, but we will tell you if that is the better fit rather than issue a letter that misstates your situation. Many states penalize misrepresenting a pet as a service animal, and an inaccurate letter can put you at risk.
PSD letter pricing
A letter covering one or two dogs costs $149, and a letter covering three dogs costs $229. Booking the evaluation is free, and there is no subscription or membership. Once a letter is issued it is non-refundable except to correct an error on our part; our refund policy explains the details.
States we serve
Clinicians can only evaluate people where they are lawfully able to, so we confirm your state at the start of booking. If we cannot serve you, we will say so.
We are not a crisis service and we do not replace ongoing mental health care. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or call 911 in an emergency.
How our content is made
The guides on this site are written from primary sources such as ADA.gov, HUD, the U.S. Department of Transportation, NIMH and MedlinePlus, and reviewed for clinical accuracy by Andrew Patel, M.D. Our editorial policy explains how pages are researched, reviewed and updated. Our pages explain the law in plain language but are not legal advice.
