Honest by design
Where a PSD letter helps
We’d rather you know the rules than buy paperwork you don’t need.

Renting a home
When your disability or need isn't obvious, a landlord may ask for reliable information. A clinician's letter is the usual way to give it, without sharing your diagnosis.
PSD letters for housing
Planning a flight
Airlines use the DOT service animal form, which you fill in yourself. Some handlers carry a letter as background; we explain exactly what airlines can ask.
PSD letters for travel
Stores and restaurants? No letter needed
Under the ADA, staff can ask only two questions. They can't demand a letter, ID or vest, so we won't sell you one for that.
The two-questions rule
How it works
How to get a PSD letter
01Book free
Pick a time online. The booking step confirms your state. No card needed to book.
02Talk 5–10 minutes
A licensed clinician asks about your condition and the tasks your dog is trained to do, by phone or video.
03Letter, if appropriate
If the evaluation supports it, you pay and receive a signed PDF with full license details. If not, you pay nothing.
What you receive
What your PSD letter includes
A legitimate letter is short and specific. Ours includes everything a housing provider needs to verify it, and nothing about your health that they aren’t entitled to.
- 1Clinician detailsName, license type, license number and issuing state, so a landlord can verify it.
- 2Date and contactThe date of the letter and how to reach the clinician's office.
- 3Disability-related needA statement that you have a disability and your dog performs related tasks, without your diagnosis in detail.
- 4SignatureSigned by the licensed clinician who evaluated you, as a PDF you can send right away.

PSD letter vs online registries
Registries and certificates sell paperwork. A PSD letter documents a clinician’s evaluation.
Under the ADA there is no official service dog registry. Why registries don’t matter

Frequently asked questions
How much does a PSD letter cost?
$149 for a letter covering 1–2 dogs, or $229 for 3 dogs. Booking is free, and you pay only if a clinician approves a letter.
Do I need a PSD letter to take my dog into stores?
No. Under the ADA, businesses can't require documentation for a service dog, and a letter doesn't grant public access.
Will airlines accept my PSD letter?
Airlines may require the DOT Service Animal Air Transportation Form instead. A letter can accompany the form but isn't what airlines require.
How long is the evaluation?
About 5–10 minutes by phone or video with a licensed clinician.
Is my approval assured?
No. A licensed clinician decides based on your evaluation, and a letter is issued only if it's appropriate.
Do you offer service dog registration or ID cards?
No. There's no federal registry, and registrations or ID cards have no legal effect under the ADA.
How do I contact you?

More about usaPsdletter.com
What is a psychiatric service dog
A psychiatric service dog (PSD) is a dog individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a psychiatric disability. The Department of Justice gives examples such as reminding a person to take prescribed medication and calming a person with PTSD during an anxiety attack.
Training is what makes a dog a service animal. A dog that offers comfort just by being with you is valued and important, but under federal law it's an emotional support animal, not a service dog. Our clinicians help you understand which description is accurate for you.
What a PSD letter is for
The most common use is housing. Under the Fair Housing Act, housing providers must make reasonable accommodations to rules like a no-pets policy when needed because of a disability, and may ask for reliable information when the need isn't obvious. A letter from a licensed clinician who evaluated you is a common way to provide it.
For flights, airlines may require the DOT Service Animal Air Transportation Form, which you complete yourself. That form, not a letter, is what airlines may require. A letter can travel with you as supporting context.
What a PSD letter is not for
A PSD letter is not needed for public access and does not grant public access. Under the ADA, stores, restaurants and other public places can't require documentation. When a dog's role isn't obvious, staff may ask only whether it's required because of a disability and what task it's trained to perform.
There is also no federal service dog registry, ID card, certificate or required vest. The Department of Justice says online certificates and registrations convey no rights under the ADA. We don't sell them.
How it works
Book online for free; the booking step confirms your state, since our clinicians can only evaluate people where they can lawfully practice. Then have a 5–10 minute phone or video evaluation with a licensed clinician about your condition and your dog's trained tasks.
If the clinician finds a letter appropriate, you pay and receive a signed PDF. It includes the clinician's name, license type, license number, issuing state and the date. If not, you aren't charged.
Our licensed clinicians
Gabriel Warner, LCSW, is a licensed clinical social worker who carries out the mental health evaluations behind PSD letter requests and issues letters when appropriate. Andrew Patel, M.D., is a physician who reviews evaluations and signs letters when the clinical findings support one; he also reviews the content on this site.
Our clinicians make independent decisions. We never promise approval, and we can't promise how a landlord, airline or employer will respond.
PSD letter or ESA letter
If your dog comforts you but hasn't been trained to perform a task, a PSD letter isn't the right document; an emotional support animal (ESA) letter is. We don't sell ESA letters, but we'll be straightforward about it.
A service dog can be a real support, but it doesn't replace mental health care. If you're in crisis, call or text 988, or call 911 in an emergency.
Psychiatric service dog tasks
People with many different conditions work with psychiatric service dogs, including PTSD, anxiety and panic disorders, depression and bipolar disorder. The tasks are as individual as the people: a dog might apply deep pressure when panic builds, nudge its handler at medication time, wake someone from a nightmare, or lead the way out of a crowded room.
Training takes time and consistency, and many handlers train their own dogs, which the ADA allows. Whatever route you take, the dog needs to be reliably trained and well behaved in public before it works as a service dog there.
Your privacy and choices
Your letter confirms a disability-related need for your dog without listing your diagnosis in detail, and housing providers ordinarily shouldn't ask about the nature or severity of a disability. You decide who receives a copy and when.
Have a question before you book? Email support@usapsdletter.com and we'll answer in plain language.
Common PSD letter questions
Many people ask whether their dog needs a vest, whether it must be professionally trained, or whether a letter lets them skip a landlord's pet rules. The short answers: no vest is required, owner training is allowed, and a letter supports a housing accommodation request rather than overriding the process.
Our guides on who qualifies, the difference between a psychiatric service dog and an emotional support animal, and how housing and flight rules work explain each of these in more depth, with links to the federal sources.
